Important Factor #1 When Searching for Your Wedding Photographer - Photographic Style

When it comes to choosing a photographer for your wedding, there are a huge number of factors that you might want to consider. This could include everything from how well a photographer knows your venue right through to the final package that you will receive. However, in my experience, considerations often come down to three important factors:

Style - the final look and feel of the images that you will receive

Approach - how the photographer will approach your day

Cost - how much it will actually cost to employ a photographer for your event

There are so many photographers out there that it can be very easy to get overwhelmed and confused about who might be the best photographer for you. My philosophy is to ensure that I am completely open and transparent about each of the three considerations I have listed above so that potential clients can immediately judge whether I should make it on to their shortlist.

With that in mind I want to take a closer look at each factor in turn and provide a bit more insight into my photographic services. And so, without further ado, lets start with Style.

What is “photographic style”?

Each photographer is unique in their own style. Essentially, it is the way their final photographs look. When you start searching for a photographer this will probably be the first thing that will draw your attention as you start to take a look through various photographers portfolios.

How important is “style”?

I would say that style is one of the most important factors to consider. You want to make sure that, firstly, you start narrowing down your choice of photographers who provide a style that you absolutely love. Photography is an art and so there is no point booking a photographer with, for example, a light and airy style but then requesting dark, atmospheric photos from them.

Secondly, you want to ensure that each of the photographers you are considering are consistent in their style. Consistency really is key because you want to be confident that the photos you see on their portfolio will be similar to what they will provide for you after your celebration. A photographer who has a portfolio displaying lots of vastly different styles will always ring alarm bells for me because you will never truly know what the final photographic result will be.

How would you describe your photographic style?

I would describe my style as natural, vibrant, joyful and truthful. My aim is to capture authentic images and then enhance them just that tiniest little bit to give them a colourful pop!

I’m a bit of a stickler for photos being in focus! I want my images to be crisp, sharp, true-to-life and well-composed. I’m not really a fan of fads and temporary editing trends - this ensures that my photos remain classic and will hopefully stand the test of time.

I should also say that I love a black and white photo! I feel this works particularly well for classic, timeless images and I can’t resist creating some high contrast images in this style. Ultimately, around 5-10% of images in the galleries I deliver are black and white images.

Do you have an idea of the type of photographic style you want for your wedding photographs? My advice is to look at as many different photographers portfolios as possible - you might find that a certain style draws your eye immediately. Conversely, you may discover there are styles of photography that you don’t really like and eliminating photographers with these styles from your shortlist can be hugely beneficial!

If you have any questions about photographic style then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. In my next blog post I’m going to look at the next important factor when searching for your wedding photographer - photographic approach.
